The question to keep in mind before seeing Beauty and the Beast

Who is this lunatic Enchantress?

Background reminder; The tale as old as time begins with the origin story of the Beast, in which a young prince is offered a rose in exchange for shelter by a hideous old woman. He tells her to go away at which point she transforms into a beautiful enchantress and places a curse upon him which will be lifted when he learns to love and be loved.

Pretending to be a hag and wandering from castle to castle hoping to entrap royalty in being mean to her (ugly or not, who the hell expects to pay for a nights' accommodation with a flower?), this enchantress has some major issues. She starts off ugly but in order to prove her power as an enchantress she becomes beautiful, thus negating her earlier point about beauty being within. Then there's the severity and scope of the curse. Despite what that picture above might suggest, some brief Sherlock Holmesing reveals the prince to be 11 years old at the time of the curse. 11 freaking years old! There are no doubt thousands of primary school teachers who would love the power to place curses on disobedient tweens, but then demanding they find love by 21 is just plain unreasonable. In the event he wasn't selfish and short tempered (AKA a typical 11 year old) and he let her stay the night, what was her plan then? Crash in his castle until she got bored?

And besides failing to do their job (what prince answers his own castle door?) what did the servants do wrong to warrant being cursed? She doesn't even see them before deciding every single inhabitant of the castle is in need of some major cursin'. Or she was just a massive fan of nominative determinism.

And she is never mentioned again. The Beast never brings her up, which you would think would be a good opening line. "Hi, when I was 11 an enchantress cursed me for being 11. LOVE ME!"

On second though that may have just compounded his problem.

None of the servants ever bring her up either, so we are left wondering who she was and where she went.

Perhaps she adopted a drag queen persona and moved under the sea to mess with Mer-Royalty.
